Motor Coach Industries Vehicle Identification Number Explanation
Current
Effective November 13, 2020 a new VIN methodology was introduced for 2021 and later coaches. This was done to bring the common features of MCI and New Flyer VINs together. Digits 4, 6 and 8 in particular are now the same function as in New Flyer VINs. [1] The Crookston, Minnesota New Flyer plant has been added as a final MCI assembly point.[2] The Series field now includes more detailed model information including a separate entry for the D45 CRT LE. [3] Effective March 2022, the model designations for D40 CRT and D45 CRT were replaced with D40 CRT LE and D45 CRT LE.[4]
The first known sightings of these new format VINs was on a run of 58 buses built for New Jersey Transit. These new VINs started with Units 82843-82900. It is presumed that certain numbers have been skipped due to conflicts with older buses such as the 81000- and 90000-series. MCI and New Flyer are now sharing a common pool of serial numbers among all of their transit bus and coach models.
