Mississauga Transit 9701-9735

Mississauga Transit 9701-9735 were 1997 Orion 05.501 buses. They replaced various GM and Flyer buses from the 1970s and 80s.

They were originally ordered by WMATA of Washington, D.C, and destined to become WMATA buses, but funding cutbacks forced them to cut a number of them off their order. Mississauga Transit wanted high floor buses, but the Ontario government would only chip in if low floors were purchased. Due to Orion being stuck with the several partially-completed buses, they offered them at a reduced price, and Mississauga was able to purchase them without provincial funding.

These units were originally scheduled to retire in October 2011; however, delays in their replacements (1101-1143) entering service, they lasted until the end of November. A ceremony was held at City Centre terminal on December 1, 2011, when the final unit 9728 entered the terminal on route 53, and was replaced by 1106, signalling a fully low-floor fleet.
