The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, commonly referred to as the MTA, is a public benefit corporation and is the parent organization and provides oversight to a number of public transit agencies serving southeastern New York state, most importantly, the New York City Metropolitan Area. Providing service to a vast urbanized region consisting of many millions of residents, the MTA transit network is North America's largest.

The MTA provides transportation service in a variety of modes, listed below:

• MTA New York City Subway provides rapid transit rail service within four boroughs of New York City.
• MTA Long Island Rail Road provides commuter rail service for Long Island
• MTA Metro-North Railroad provides commuter rail service for the Hudson Valley region, southwestern Connecticut, and northeastern New Jersey (the latter is operated by New Jersey Transit.)
• MTA Staten Island Railway provides rapid transit rail service in Staten Island.
• MTA Regional Bus Operations (RBO), under the MTA New York City Transit and MTA Bus Company divisions, provides local and express bus service throughout the five boroughs of New York City. MTA Long Island Bus, a former division of RBO, provided bus service in Nassau County on Long Island.
• MTA Bridges and Tunnels operates various bridges and tunnels in New York City.

Governance

The MTA Board is comprised of twenty-three members, of which include different mayors of larger cities served by MTA, county commissioners, varied union members (non-voting) and members installed by the Governor of New York State. Of the board members, seventeen carry voting privileges, of which four (the representatives from Dutchess, Orange, Putnam and Rockland County) carry one collective vote among themselves.
