MTA Long Island Bus

MTA Long Island Bus was a former public transit provider for Nassau County in the state of New York that was operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Although MTA Long Island Bus' service area was Nassau County, several of their routes extended into the adjacent Queens and Suffolk Counties, providing connections with the MTA's bus and subway network, as well as Suffolk County's public bus network, among others.

Please note that this page and any pages related to it are very much under construction.

History

MTA Long Island Bus was originally created in 1973 under the name Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority (MSBA) when the numerous private companies operating public transit in Nassau County were consolidated into one publicly-owned agency. In 1995, MSBA was rebranded as MTA Long Island Bus. In 2011, due to Nassau County's unwillingness to increase their subsidy of MTA Long Island Bus, the MTA decided to pull out of providing bus service to Nassau County. On January 1st, 2012, operation of MTA Long Island Bus was turned over to Veolia Transport for their newly-created Nassau Inter-County Express system.

Former Operators

There were a multitude of private companies operating public transit service in Nassau County before the MSBA many of which that were absorbed by other companies prior to the takeover, were subsidiaries of larger companies. A brief, but incomplete list of former operators of transit routes in Nassau County can be found in the above link.
