Kipling Bus Terminal is a transit hub owned and operated by Metrolinx in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada. It is located just west of TTC's Kipling subway station at 120 Subway Crescent. Currently, the bus terminal only serves MiWay bus routes, however, GO Transit buses are planned to serve the terminal in the future.

History

The bus terminal is part of the larger Kipling Transit Hub project by Metrolinx which aims to provide a seamless connection between MiWay, Toronto Transit Commission, and GO Transit bus and rail services in Toronto's west end. This terminal was built in anticipation of increased density stemming from the completion of the Six Points Interchange project and the possibility of new all-day, two-way service on the GO Transit Milton Line in the future under the GO Rail Expansion program. In addition, the new bus terminal would provide a new connection for MiWay buses connecting to the TTC network as the terminal at Islington Station is not wheelchair accessible and lacks the amenities present in modern terminus facilities.

In April 2017, Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to three prequalified teams for the new Kipling Bus Terminal.[1] The RFP was closed in October 2017 and on March 22, 2018, EllisDon Infrastructure Transit (EDIT) was awarded a $73 million dollar contract to design, build, and finance the bus terminal project. The design of the transit hub and bus terminal was to be done by Strasman Architects. Construction on the terminal began on April 13, 2018 and was anticipated to be complete in late 2020.[2][3]

The bus terminal will be built over the former Subway Crescent commuter parking lot for the nearby Kipling Station. A majority of Subway Crescent west of Aukland Road will also be removed except for a stub section which will be used to provide bus access to the terminal from Dundas Street West.

On December 29, 2020, construction was officially completed on the bus terminal. MiWay shifted services from its former terminal at Islington Station to the new terminal on January 4, 2021.[4]

The pedestrian tunnel stretching between the Kipling Station underground concourse and the Passenger Pickup and Drop-off building was opened on May 18, 2021. This provides a fully indoor and accessible connection between Kipling Station and the Kipling Bus Terminal.[5]

Terminal description

The entrance to the terminal is located on the north side of the terminal and is accessed from Subway Crescent. Inside the entrance building, there are stairs and elevators that lead to a pedestrian bridge or tunnel, with both connecting to the terminal building. The terminal features 14 bus bays and a bus roadway that wraps around the center island and the enclosed waiting area. A large overhead canopy around the terminal provides protection from the elements.

The pedestrian bridge which connects the entrance building and the bus terminal also extends over GO Transit's Milton Line to provide a connection to Kipling GO Station. In addition, the underground pedestrian tunnel leads to the Passenger Pickup and Drop-off building and the underground concourse at Kipling TTC Station.

Routes

Connection to TTC bus routes can be made at Kipling Station by using the underground pedestrian tunnel.
