Kingston Transit route 1 is an accessible route in the city of Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Route Details

Route 1 starts at the Montreal Street Park & Ride, located along Montreal Street just north of Highway 401. The route then goes south along Montreal Street to Weller Avenue. From there it proceeds west along local roads in the Rideau Heights neighbourhood to Division Street. From there it loops around and heads back east through the Rideau Heights neighbourhood back to Montreal Street. It then heads south on Montreal to the downtown core, briefly leaving Montreal Street to service the Rideaucrest home at Rideau & North.

From downtown, the bus travels south along Bagot Street to Queen's University. The bus travels through the university along Stuart Street, University Avenue, and Union Street, then proceeds west on Union Street & King Street West to St. Lawrence College, it's terminus.

Service towards St. Lawrence College is signed as "1 St. Lawrence College", and service towards the Montreal St Park & Ride is signed as "1 Montreal Street".

Much of its route is complementary to Route 2. The two routes alternate in schedule to provide combined 15 minute frequency for passengers travelling between the Montreal Street Park & Ride, Downtown, Queen's University, and St. Lawrence College.

Route 1 has high ridership especially between Downtown & St. Lawrence College. This often peaks along Union Street between Queen's West Campus and Queen's Main Campus. Kingston Transit often runs an additional bus along this portion of the route, which is typically unnumbered and signed "Extra Bus."

Route 1 interlines with routes 6 (which in turn interlines with 14) on evenings and weekends.

Schedule

The route runs from 5:45am to 11:40pm Monday to Saturday, and from 7:45am to 8:40pm on Sundays. It has a 30 minute frequency on Monday-Saturday prior to about 7pm, at which point it drops to 60 minute frequency. It also runs at 60 minute frequency on Sundays.

The scheduled travel time is 45 minutes from end to end--30 minutes from Montreal St Park & Ride to Downtown, and 15 minutes from Downtown to St. Lawrence College.

History

Route 1 originally traveled on Princess Street and had its western terminus in the Cataraqui Woods community, serving the Kingston Centre and Cataraqui Centre. The Cataraqui Woods portion of the route was replaced by an extension of route B in 2012 due to relatively low demand.

Route 1 was heavily restructured in September 2013. Service along Princess Street was replaced by trips of new express routes 501 and 502. Route 1 was re-routed to terminate at St. Lawrence College, via Stuart Street, University Avenue, and Union Street, replacing a portion of route 6.

Prior to 2015, route 1 did not service its loop on Division Street. Instead, it looped around at the Weller Avenue cul-de-sac.

Sunday hours of operation for route 1 were extended to the equivalent of Saturday service in September 2017. The route's frequencies remain the same, however.

A new express route (801/802) was introduced along the Montreal Street corridor in May 2018, with service between Queen's University and Montreal Street P&R. In line with this introduction, route 1 was routed away from the Montreal Street P&R, and now loops around the Rideau Heights community.

Route 1 is primarily a 40ft route, and uses New Flyer D40LF/D40LFR, New Flyer XD40, and Nova LFS.
