International Truck and Engine MaxxForce DT

The International Truck and Engine MaxxForce DT is the successor to the International Truck and Engine DT 466E and similarly is used in buses and class 6-7 trucks. The MaxxForce DT is an inline six cylinder, 7.6 litre diesel engine.

The MaxxForce DT is still similar to the DT 466E in that it features a wet-sleeve cylinder design where uniform material thickness allows even cylinder cooling.[1] International also boasts the benefit of returning the engine to original factory specifications by fully rebuilding the engine in-frame with a works kit from International.[1] Each cylinder features six head-bolts per which allow for even clamping. The MaxxForce DT like the later DT 466E, features International's electronic variable response turbocharger (EVRT), and their electro-hydraulic generation two unit injection (G2). The EVRT provides exhaust backpressure to control exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) flow rate as well as exhaust braking.[2]

Unlike the DT 466E, the MaxxForce DT meets the EPA 2007 emissions regulations. The engine features a closed crankcase ventilator and a regenerating particulate filter (DPF) is standard. The G2 fuel also allows the DPF to regeneration without downstream equipment. A second dose of fuel from the G2 injectors is delivered after combustion is complete and the unburned fuel is pushed out of the cylinder with the exhaust. The mixture then it oxidizes with a catalyst where heat is released and reduces particulate matter to carbon dioxide (CO2) and water.[2]

Though many other engine manufacturers choose to use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to meet the EPA 2010 emission standards International has decided to not use SCR. Instead, International will use advanced EGR which they believe is more benefitial as there is no need for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and other equipment related to SCR.[3] The 2010 engines will also use a regulated two-stage turbocharger system and upgraded cooling system which International claims will "provide outstanding boost and response for every application".[4]
