History

Halifax Transit #401

The Halifax Transit Corporation was the name of the public transit agency operated by the City of Halifax, Nova Scotia, from 1970 to 1980. The city took over all transit operations from the Nova Scotia Light & Power Company at midnight on December 31, 1969. All 81 of NSL&P's Can Car T44's and T44A's were removed from service, and replaced with 55 35-foot GMDD T6H-4521's, and 19 40-foot GMDD T6H-5305's. Halifax Transit would end up purchasing an additional 27 40-foot New Looks between 1971 and 1978. The 12 35-foot GMDD TDH-4519 diesel buses purchased by NSL&P in 1963 were kept on and repainted in Halifax Transit's livery.

Halifax Transit's livery was a single large purple stripe just below window level wrapping around the back and two sides of the bus, stopping short of the front door and front drivers window. The name Halifax Transit was painted in uppercase letters in orange near the back on the two sides, and the new HTC logo was painted also in orange on the sides just behind the front door and drivers window.

In early 1980, the two transit agencies in the cities of Halifax and Dartmouth were merged into one, named the Metropolitan Transit Commission, with the name Metro Transit used in publications and on the buses. All Halifax Transit buses were kept on and repainted in Metro Transit's green and blue livery.

Halifax Transit operated out of the same garage the NSL&P used on Young Street in north-end Halifax, where a grocery store sits today.
