Durham Region Transit 8601-8626 are 2012 model New Flyer XD40 buses built in 2013 exclusively for the DRT Pulse Bus Rapid Transit network.
Due to the nature of these buses being used on the dedicated PULSE service, these buses have a modified livery based on that of the conventional DRT fleet, consisting of a darker shade of green with narrow orange stripes that blend in with the PULSE logo, as well as an orange front. They are equipped with frameless side windows, silver wheel caps, a digital front run number sign, and exterior cameras. Except for the cameras, all of these are absent from the conventional fleet.
The interior layout is similar to the conventional XD40s, but features a different seating model with head supports and grey seat maquette. The emergency exit hatches on the roof are a new type that incorporates glass, acting like a skylight.
These buses entered service on June 29, 2013 with the launch of route 900 PULSE Highway 2. In 2014, they were among the first to receive INIT smart bus technologies, which would eventually equip DRT's entire fleet.
