Durham Region Transit 8501-8515
Durham Region Transit 8501-8515 are New Flyer XD40 buses built in late 2011 and delivered beginning December 21, 2011 to early January 2012. This batch is part of the Metrolinx Transit Purchasing Co-operative order for buses for delivery in 2011.[1] These are the first order of Xcelsiors for Durham, who's new buses have only been New Flyer D40LF since the system was formed in 2006.
These buses have seating for 37 passengers or 30 passengers and two wheelchairs. The seats are in charcoal with yellow grab handles and charcoal backs. The inserts are in Holdsworth Fabrics' YSW24954 moquette. DRT continued with the 2+1 seating to the high floor section. The new Xcelsior platform however, allowed for two 2+2 rows, one perimeter, another 2+2 row on either side towards the rear seats. The wheelchair ramp is located at the front door. The rear door uses Vapor vTouch touch bars for passenger operation. Heating, cooling and ventilation are provided by a new roof mounted Thermo King RLF unit, and almost all and passenger windows are of the tip-in transom design. The second window after the front door and the last window on the driver's side are of the sliding design following the configuration that has been specified since the second consortium batch. Those windows open a small distance to allow increased airflow throughout the bus if the air conditioning fails.
After being fitted with bike racks, new Motorola radios, GFI fareboxes, and Presto equipment, the buses gradually entered service in the third week of January. They can be found on any conventional DRT route.
