Detroit Department of Transportation route 8 'Caniff'

8 Caniff was a bus route operated by the Detroit Department of Transportation in Detroit, Michigan, United States. All service formerly provided by this route is currently provided by route 38 Plymouth.

Route Details

At the time of discontinuation, this route travelled between Tuxedo and LaSalle Streets on the west side of Detroit and Hayes Street and 8 Mile Road (east of Gratiot Avenue) on the east side.

History

  • 1929 - Service begins by the Detroit Street Railway as a short feeder route along Caniff Street, connecting Conant Street in Hamtramck to the Oakland Street streetcar line.
  • 1930 - Service discontinued due to the Great Depression.
  • July 10, 1939 - Service restarts, this time operating from Woodward Avenue and Harmon Street to the west and Van Dyke Street and Harper Avenue to the east.
  • May 13, 1940 - Route merges with the Plymouth bus route, forming a crosstown Plymouth-Caniff route.
  • 1943 - Service extended to Grinnell Street and French Road near Detroit City Airport and Gratiot Avenue.
  • April 3, 1955 - Route splits and the Caniff and Plymouth routes now operate on their own. Caniff route now terminates at Tuxedo and LaSalle.
  • January 26, 1968 - Night and Sunday services begin to be provided by a merger of the Caniff and Plymouth routes.
  • July 1, 1974 - Service carried on by DDOT.
  • June 25, 2011 - Route merges again with route 38, thus discontinuing service as a separate bus route.
