Route Details

The current routing of route 52.

This route primarily services Chene Street between Lafayette Boulevard and East Grand Boulevard and Joseph Campau Street between Hamtramck Drive and Nevada Street.

History

  • April 6, 1952 - Service begins as a Detroit Street Railway route after the Baker streetcar line converts to buses. The Chene bus route takes over the east-side portion of this crosstown streetcar route. Initially, the route operates from Cadillac Square in downtown Detroit to Joseph Campau and Davison Streets via Chene Street and Joseph Campau.
  • 1966 - Service extended along Davison, Mount Elliott and East Nevada Streets to Van Dyke, replacing portions of the newly-discontinued Davison Shuttle route. Night service, however, continued to terminate at Joseph Campau and Davison.
  • September 1966 - Route given the number 21.
  • July 1, 1974 - Service carried on by DDOT.
  • June 1975 - Route renumbered to 10.
  • 1980 - Service rerouted from Chene and I-94 to Joesph Campau and Denton Streets via East Grand Boulevard and Hamtramck Drive due to the neighborhood in between being completely demolished for a General Motors plant.
  • 1989 - Service rerouted via Joseph Campau and East Nevada from Davison and Joseph Campau to Nevada and Van Dyke.
  • 1997 - Evening service to the Bel-Air Shopping Center via Van Dyke and 8 Mile added.
  • December 2001 - Downtown terminus is relocated from Cadillac Square to Capitol Park.
  • 2004 - Service to the Bel-Air Shopping Center discontinued.
  • April 23, 2005 - Due to systemwide service cuts, overnight service is discontinued.
  • July 14, 2009 - Downtown terminus is relocated from Capitol Park to the Rosa Parks Transit Center.
  • September 1, 2018 - To accommodate route number usage for the ConnectTen network, route is renamed 52 Chene.
