43 Schoolcraft is a bus route operated by the Detroit Department of Transportation in Detroit, Michigan, United States.

Route Details

This route travels mostly through the west side of Detroit via Schoolcraft Street between the Redford Plaza at Telegraph Road and West Chicago Street (near the Detroit Diesel plant and headquarters) to the west and 8 Mile and Ryan Roads to the east.

History

  • November 27, 1926 - Service begins as a Detroit Street Railway route providing feeder service to the Grand River streetcar, operating from Grand River Avenue to Blackstone Street via Schoolcraft.
  • 1928 - Service extended west to Outer Drive and east to Oakman Boulevard and Grand River via Schoolcraft, Cloverlawn Street (east)/Northlawn Street (west), Elmhurst Street and Oakman.
  • 1936 - Service extended west to Dale Street (a block east of Telegraph).
  • June 1948 - Service extended east to the Woodward Terminal Loop at Woodward Avenue and Manchester Street via Ewald Circle, Oakman and several residential streets in Highland Park, replacing service along the Oakman bus route, which is rerouted via Davison Street.
  • 1959 - Service extended west to Inkster Road.
  • 1960's - Service extended west to the Detroit Race Course in Livonia.
  • September 3, 1965 - Service now operates via Schoolcraft, Cloverlawn/Northlawn, Davison and Ewald Circle.
  • July 1, 1974 - Service carried on by DDOT.
  • Early 1990's - East end modified to operate via the newly-redeveloped Manchester Parkway.
  • June 1994 - Service extended south to Wonderland Mall.
  • Late 1990's - Service cut back to Telegraph and Schoolcraft.
  • 2000's - Service extended south to the Redford Plaza.
  • February 10, 2014 - Service extended east to 8 Mile and Ryan, replacing portions of the newly-discontinued route 36.
