Detroit Department of Transportation 1700-1728 is wheelchair accessible.

Detroit Department of Transportation 1700-1728 are New Flyer Industries XD40 buses built in 2017 and delivered in 2017 and 2018.

To accommodate a number of recent service expansions, the Transportation Department originally planned to order 20 buses in 2017.[1] After a massive fire at the Shoemaker Terminal in January 2017, the Transportation Department added 9 additional buses to the order to serve as replacements for the buses, which were D40LF models from 2003, 2004, and 2005, that were burned beyond repair in that fire.

Buses 1701-1717 are the second DDOT buses to feature those exact fleet numbers, which were previously used by 1979 GMC RTS-03 (T7W-203) buses.

Like DDOT's previous Xcelsior orders, these feature full-raised rooflines. These are also the first DDOT buses to be delivered with rear windows since a 1980 order of GMC RTS-03 (T8H-203) buses, and also the first to be equipped with rear route number destination signs, and the first with glass emergency exit hatches. To accommodate these new features, the livery was slightly modified while also including a completely redesigned DDOT logo.
