The Detroit Diesel DD13, introduced in August 2008, is an inline six cylinder, 12.8 litre diesel engine based on the larger DD15. It boasts up to 5% better fuel economy than a similarly spec'd MBE 4000 through the amplified common rail fuel system (ACRS) which optimizes each injection event. An advanced cooling system also decreases the operating time of the fan.

The engine meets EPA 2010 emmissions through Daimler's BlueTec emissions technology which uses the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process.

The engine is will be used on less-than-truckload, vocational, or regional trucks and on EPA 2010 compliant Setra S 417 coaches in North America; replacing the Detroit Diesel Series 60.
