The Cummins L9 features enhanced on-board diagnostics (OBD) that ensure emissions stay within the EPA limits as well as enhanced electronic controls. Cummins has also added a particulate matter sensor. The engine meets EPA 2016 and GHG 2017 regulations. It boats a 15 percent improvement in fuel economy over the 2007 ISL.<ref name=brochure /> Engine electronic controls and optimized combustion formula help achieve Euro 6 Phase-C compliance.<ref>“CUMMINS BRING EURO 6 SMART EFFICIENCY TO FIAA SHOW.” Press release. Cummins, 23 May 2017.</ref> Further electronics refinement allowed the L9 to meet the more stringent Euro 6 Phase-D regulations in 2019. Phased-D required reduced Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions during lower speed city operations, as well as under cold engine start conditions. Real-world, on-road testing was also required during testing.<ref>[https://www.cummins.com/news/releases/2019/06/07/cummins-takes-euro-vi-step-ahead-phase-d-certified-diesels “Cummins Takes a Euro VI Step Ahead with Phase-D Certified Diesels.”] Press release. The EPA 2021 L9 features a new head gasket material and more robust turbocharger actutor.has been made even more robust. The oil pan rail and gasket have also been re-engineered. With a lower peak torque speed, the EPA 2021 L9 provides broader torque availability. Parasitic losses in the engine system have been reduced through new piston ring tensions and coatings, modifications to the camshaft valve timing that reduce pumping work in the air handling system, and reduced and optimized water pump speeds. The updated L9 engine also features a next-generation electronic control module.
Cummins is set to replace both the L9 and [[Cummins X12 and X15|X12]] engines with the new [[Cummins X10|X10]] offering in 2026.
