Cummins ISL
The Cummins ISL is an 8.9 litre, straight-6 diesel engine designed and produced by Cummins. It went into production in 1998 and was based on the 8.3 liter ISC engine. The ISL was designed to bridge a gap in Cummins' line of engines that the discontinuation of L10 had left, but the ISL has little in common with the L10.
The Cummins ISL also has a sister engine which is based on the existing ISL 8.9-liter block which runs on compressed natural gas called the L Gas Plus.
By October 2002, the EPA 2004 compliant ISL was produced which met the 2.5 g/hp-hr of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC) and 0.1 g/hp-hr of particulate matter standard. By late 2003, Cummins announced an updated engine that had a High-Pressure Common-Rail (HPCR) system[1] to help better meet EPA 2004 emissions. A variable geometry turbocharger system was also to help with the performance on this engine.
To meet EPA 2007 regulations of 0.01 g/hp-hr of particulate matter, a particulate filter was made standard and a crankcase coalecing filter was added to control crankcase emmission. Durring the phase-in period between 2007 and 2009, Cummins will produce 50% of their engines to meet EPA 2010 regulations. To meet EPA 2010, the ISL, known henceforth as the ISL9, uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce NOx to 0.2 gr/hp-hr. EPA 2010 certification for the ISL9 was awarded on January 8, 2010.
The ISL outside North America, known as the ISLe, meets Euro 4 and Euro 5 emissions through SCR as well.
