49 Metrotown Station/UBC TransLink Accessible bullet-b.png is a bus route operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Route Details

This is an east-west route connecting Metrotown Station in Burnaby and the University of British Columbia running primarily on 49th Avenue. It is a Frequent Transit Network (FTN) route providing service 15 minutes or better, 15 hours or more of the day, seven days a week.

Eastbound trips depart from the University of British Columbia heading south on Wesbrook Mall, east on SW Marine Drive, east on W. 41st Avenue, south on Dunbar Street, east on SW Marine Drive, east on W. 49th Avenue becoming Imperial Avenue, north on Willingdon Extension becoming Willingdon Avenue, and east on Central Boulevard to Metrotown Station.

Westbound trips depart from Metrotown Station heading east on Central Boulevard, west on Imperial Avenue becoming E. 49th Avenue, west on SW Marine Drive, north on Dunbar Street, west on W. 41st Avenue, west on SW Marine Drive, and north on Wesbrook Mall to the University of British Columbia.

Select westbound evening weekday trips terminate at Dunbar Loop and some eastbound evening weekday trips start at Dunbar Loop. Select evening and late-night westbound trips terminate at Granville Street & W. 49th Avenue.

Some early morning eastbound trips start at Dunbar Loop or at W. 49th Avenue & Granville Street. During peak hours, some eastbound trips also start at Langara–49th Avenue Station.

Some peak hour westbound trips start at W. 49th Avenue & Oak Street and two westbound AM peak hour trips start at E. 49th Avenue & Tyne Street.

On weekday afternoons when school is in session, one westbound trip starts at E. 49th Avenue & Boundary Road and terminates at Dunbar Loop with no changes in routing. One eastbound trip starts at W. 49th Avenue & East Boulevard and terminates at Metrotown Station with no changes in routing as well.

History

  • March 1975 - Route introduced as 49 Forty-Ninth and connected Kingsway & Nelson in Burnaby with the University of British Columbia at University Blvd. & East Mall, with frequency every 15 minutes between Burnaby and Dunbar Loop and every 30 minutes to UBC[1]
  • October 1976 - UBC service revised to run only when UBC was in session following an extension of the 41 to UBC[2]
  • May 1984 - Destination sign simplification: Service renamed from 49 Forty-Ninth to 49 Burnaby South/Dunbar Loop/UBC[3]
  • March 1986 - Service rerouted to service Metrotown Station with new service along Imperial, Willingdon and Central Boulevard to Metrotown Station.[4] Service to Kingsway & Nelson discontinued
  • September 1986 - Service rerouted via Imperial, McKay, Maywood, Willingdon, Central Boulevard to Metrotown Station[5]
  • September 1990 - Accessible service introduced for select trips[6]
  • April 2000 - Peak hour service to UBC revised to run year-round[7]
  • September 2000 - Operations transferred to Oakridge Transit Centre from Burnaby Transit Centre
  • September 2001 - Metrotown Station reconstruction: Terminus temporarily revised to Patterson Station[8]
  • November 2001 - Metrotown Station reopens; service to Patterson Station discontinued[9]
  • September 2004 - Introduction of Langara College short-turn service during peak hours when Langara College was in session. Westbound service terminated at 49th & Alberta and eastbound service started at 49th & Cambie. All trips bypassed the 54th Avenue routing and remained on 49th Avenue in both directions except for one eastbound trip, which started at 49th & Oak
  • September 2005 - Service and frequency increased for trips starting/ending at UBC
  • December 2005 - Routing near Metrotown revised in both directions to remain on Willingdon Avenue to Imperial Street. Service along Maywood Street, McKay Avenue, and on Imperial Street between Willingdon Extension and McKay Avenue discontinued and replaced by portions of the C6 and C7
  • September 2007 - Weekday operations transferred to Richmond Transit Centre
  • June 2008 - Route added to Frequent Transit Network (FTN)[10]
  • September 2008 - Select westbound Langara short-turn trips extended from 49th & Alberta to 49th & Maple and revised to run as 49 49 & Maple. Eastbound Langara short-turn trip that started at 49th & Oak revised to start at 49th & East Boulevard and routing revised to bypass the 54th Avenue routing to be consistent with other Langara short-turn trips. Introduction of one eastbound AM Langara short-turn trip from UBC to 49th & Manitoba
  • December 2008 - Introduction of additional AM eastbound Langara short-turn trips running between 49th & Granville and 49th & Manitoba and additional AM westbound Langara short-turn trips running between 49th & Victoria and 49th & Maple
  • September 2009 - Introduction of midday service to/from UBC on weekdays, alternating between UBC and Dunbar Loop. All Langara College short-turn trips restructured: All westbound trips to start from Metrotown Station bypassing 54th Avenue and terminate at 49th & Cambie; discontinuation of all 49 49 & Maple trips. All eastbound trips to run in the PM peak hours from 49th & Cambie to Metrotown Station bypassing 54th Avenue, except for one trip that started at 49th & East Boulevard; discontinuation of AM eastbound Langara short-turn trips
  • February 1–March 21, 2010 - Vancouver 2010 Olympic service: Service rerouted near UBC and rerouted off of Wesbrook Mall and 16th Avenue via NW Marine Drive, SW Marine Drive and Wesbrook Mall north of UBC Loop[11]
  • September 2010 - Articulated bus service introduced for select peak hour trips due to overcrowding[12]
  • April 2015 - All mid-day weekday trips extended to run full route to UBC [13]
  • November 2015 - Service proposed to bypass Champlain Heights to improve travel times and due to low ridership in Champlain Heights[14]
  • June 2016 - Routing revised to bypass Champlain Heights; service on Tyne Street, E. 54th Avenue, and Kerr Street discontinued.[15] Discontinuation of peak hour, peak direction short-turn Langara College–Metrotown Station trips that ran non-stop on 49th Avenue between Tyne Street and Kerr Street
  • September 2016 - All operations transferred to Vancouver Transit Centre along with 28 New Flyer Industries XDE60 buses, providing exclusive service of articulated buses on the route. All weekend and holiday service extended to UBC with a 12.5-minute frequency.[16]
  • September 2017 - Route operations transferred back to Richmond Transit Centre
  • September 2017 - Metrotown Station renovations: Metrotown Station terminus moved from Bay 3 inside the bus loop to Bay 11 along Central Boulevard
  • January 2020 - Service along W. 16th Avenue in UEL discontinued and rerouted to Wesbrook Mall as part of RapidBus service roll-out changes to replace UBC portions of the 41.[17][18] Introduction of a second westbound short-turn trip starting at E. 49th Avenue & Tyne Street terminating at Langara–49th Avenue Station
  • September 2020 - Discontinuation of an eastbound PM school special starting from Dunbar Loop operated by Hamilton Transit Centre using 40-foot conventional buses
  • January 2021 - Saturday midday service increased from every 12 minutes to every 10 minutes; afternoon service from every 12 minutes to every 8–9 minutes; evening service from every 15 minutes to every 10–12 minutes. Sunday/holiday PM service increased from every 12–15 minutes to every 10 minutes
  • January 2022 - AM peak hour Langara–49th Avenue Station short-turn trips starting from E. 49th Avenue & Tyne Street revised to travel the full distance to UBC. Introduction of peak hour westbound trips starting from W. 49th Avenue & Oak Street. COVID-19 service adjustments for weekend/holiday trips:
    • Saturday morning service reduced from every 10–12 minutes to every 15 minutes. Saturday afternoon service reduced from every 8–10 minutes to every 12 minutes and Saturday evening service reduced from every 10–12 minutes to every 15 minutes
    • Sunday/Holiday mid-morning service reduced from every 12 minutes to every 15 minutes. Late-morning to late-afternoon Sunday/holiday service reduced from every 10 minutes to every 12 minutes and Sunday/Holiday late-afternoon to evening service reduced from every 12 minutes to every 15 minutes
