Route Details

This was an east-west express route connecting the University of British Columbia and Joyce–Collingwood Station. Service ran on weekdays only every 10–15 minutes, increasing to every 5–7 minutes during peak hours.

Eastbound trips departed from UBC Exchange heading south on Wesbrook Mall, west on W. 16th Avenue, east on SW Marine Drive, east on 41st Avenue becoming Joyce Street heading north, and west on Vanness Avenue to Joyce–Collingwood Station.

Westbound trips departed from Joyce–Collingwood Station heading west on Vanness Avenue, south on Joyce Street becoming 41st Avenue heading west, west on SW Marine Drive, east on W. 16th Avenue, and north on Wesbrook Mall to UBC Exchange.

History

• September 2000 - Service introduced as a peak hour service, with most trips running with articulated buses every 15–30 minutes
• October 2001 - Service frequency adjusted due to funding shortfall
• September 2002 - Some trips were revised to operate as non-accessible with MCI Classics, accessible trips were operated by New Flyer Industries D60 units
• February 2003 - Service proposed to be upgraded to a B-Line and extend to BCIT, running during peak hours only with a planned implementation within 3-5 years
• July 2005 - Service proposed to be upgraded to a B-Line, to be numbered 91 with transit priority measures and improved passenger amenities. The proposal looked into B-Line service on 49th Avenue instead but was shelved due to lack of community destinations. An extension to BCIT and Brentwood was also explored
• December 2005 - Articulated bus service replaced with more frequent conventional 40-foot coaches. Introduction of additional westbound trips running only when UBC was in session
• Around 2006–2007 - The non-accessible trips are revised as accessible with the retirement of MCI Classic buses, but these trips were still operated by 40-foot buses
• December 2008 - First eastbound trip revised to travel full route from UBC instead of starting at 41st & Crown
• December 2009 - Morning trips at Joyce Station revised to start at Bay 5a, several meters south from Bay 5 where afternoon trips started
• February 1–March 21, 2010 - Vancouver 2010 Olympic service: Service rerouted near UBC and rerouted off of Wesbrook Mall and 16th Avenue via NW Marine Drive, SW Marine Drive and Wesbrook Mall north of UBC Loop
• June 2016 - Select stops west of Granville Street removed to improve travel times and for consistency with the 480 service. Stops removed at SW Marine & Wesbrook; 16th & SW Marine, East Mall; Wesbrook & 16th and stops introduced at 41st Avenue & Rupert Street
• September 2016 - AM and PM trips starting at Joyce Station consolidated into one stop at Bay 5
• September 2017 - Introduction of midday service between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekdays with 15-minute frequency
• September 2018 - Evening service introduced, running every 15 minutes between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., and every 30 minutes from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.
• September 2019 - Route operations moved from Burnaby Transit Centre to Hamilton Transit Centre in preparation for RapidBus service
• January 2020 - Service discontinued and replaced with the R4 41st Ave
