Route Details

This is an east-west route running in Richmond connecting Richmond–Brighouse Station, the Riverside Industrial Park and the Riverport Entertainment Complex. Service runs daily every 15 minutes, increasing to every 10–12 minutes during peak hours on weekdays. Weekend/holiday service runs every 20–30 minutes. Most trips on weekday evenings terminate at Riverport Entertainment Complex instead, bypassing Ironwood and most trips on weekends/holidays go via Ironwood during the daytime and bypasses Ironwood in the evening, terminating at the Riverport Entertainment Complex.

Eastbound trips depart Richmond–Brighouse Station heading south on No. 3 Road, east on Cook Road, south on Garden City Road, east on Williams Road, and south on No. 5 Road. Ironwood and weekend/holiday daytime Riverport trips continue south on No. 5 Road and west on Horseshoe Way to Horseshoe Way & No. 5 Road. Weekend/holiday daytime Riverport trips continue by looping around Horseshoe Way, and north on No. 5 Road. Weekday evening Riverport trips bypass Ironwood and continue south on No. 5 Road. Then all trips from No. 5 Road & Steveston Highway head east on Steveston Highway, north on Entertainment Boulevard and around the roundabout to the Riverport Entertainment Complex.

Westbound weekday evening and all weekend/holiday trips depart from the Riverport Entertainment Complex heading south on Entertainment Boulevard, west on Steveston Highway, and north on No. 5 Road. Trips starting from Ironwood depart from Horseshoe Way & No. 5 Road by looping around Horseshoe Way and then heads north on No. 5 Road. Then, all trips continue north on No. 5 Road, west on King Road, south on Seacote Road, west on Williams Road, north on Garden City Road, west on Cook Road, and north on No. 3 Road to Richmond–Brighouse Station.

On weekday evenings, southbound trips terminate at the Riverport Entertainment Complex. The last two trips terminate at Ironwood.

On weekends/holidays, all trips terminate at the Riverport Entertainment Complex, with the last two trips terminating at Ironwood. Daytime trips go via Ironwood before continuing to Riverport Entertainment Complex with no changes in routing. Evening trips bypass Ironwood. All weekend/holiday return trips to Richmond–Brighouse Station do not service Ironwood.

On weekday afternoons when school is in session, two school special trips start at Williams Road & Garden City Road and goes towards Ironwood, terminating at Horseshoe Way & No. 5 Road with no changes in routing.

Another trip in the afternoon starts at Horseshoe Way & No. 5 Road and goes via the regular northbound routing until No. 5 Road & Seacliff Road, where it turns west onto Williams Road, bypassing King Road, and continues west on Williams Road and the regular routing to Brighouse Station. This trip runs with suburban buses.

History

  • 1958 - Service introduced as the 68 No. Four Road via Garden City connecting Sexsmith Loop and Steveston Highway & No. 4 Road
  • July 1961 - Midday weekday service revised to extend from Sexsmith Loop to Downtown Vancouver and ran as part of the 60 Richmond Express to eliminate the need to transfer between local Richmond routes and the number 60 bus[1]
  • Early-1970s - Service revised to run as 68 Garden City
  • August 1977 - Service renumbered from 68 to 408[2]
  • January 1981 - Eastern terminus extended from Williams & No. 4 Road to King & No. 5. Routing extended along Williams Road to No. 5 Rd and King, turned around via King, Seacote, Williams to regular route[3]
  • May 1984 - Destination sign simplification: Service renamed from 408 Garden City to 408 Garden City/Richmond Exchange/Vancouver[4]
  • May 2, 1986 - Peak-hour trips rerouted to go via the Moray Channel Bridge and the Arthur Laing Bridge instead of the Oak Street Bridge following the completion of new commuter ramps on Sea Island to provide faster and more direct service between Richmond and Vancouver[5][6]
  • May 30, 1986 - Mid-morning Monday–Saturday trips and all midday Sunday/holiday trips extended from Richmond Exchange to Downtown Vancouver to meet Expo 86 demand[7]
  • November 1986 - Off-peak weekday and all Saturday and Sunday/holiday trips revised to terminate at Richmond Exchange following the end of Expo 86[8]
  • December 1991 - Accessible service introduced on select trips[9]
  • December 1996 - Terminus revised from Seacote Road & King Road to Horseshoe Way and No. 5 Road.[10]
  • September 2000 - Operations transferred from Oakridge Transit Centre to Richmond Transit Centre
  • August 2001 - Service discontinued and combined with 401 One Road/Vancouver to become the 401 One Road/Garden City following introduction of the 98 B-Line;[11] service change deferred from April due to transit strike[12]
  • September 2018 - Service reintroduced to replace the Richmond–Brighouse Station and Riverport/Ironwood portions of the 401 One Road/Garden City,[13][14] with minor route adjustments compared to the old 408 before 2001, going via Cook Road to Garden City Road (southbound) instead of No. 3 Road, Granville Avenue to Garden City Road (southbound); Riverport portion also added as all pre-2001 408 trips terminated at Ironwood
  • April 2019 - Brighouse Station terminus moved to Ackroyd Road & No. 3 Road
  • September 2020 - Introduction of afternoon supplemental trips to service McRoberts Secondary School
  • October 2020 - Brighouse Station terminus moved into Bus Mall following completion of construction work; service on Ackroyd Road discontinued
  • January 2021 - Introduction of an additional school special trip towards Ironwood running half an hour earlier to service McRoberts Secondary School
  • January 18–June 20, 2021 - Introduction of an overload trip on weekday afternoons that came off from an overload 601 Ladner Exchange and 617 East Ladner/Ladner Exchange running from No. 4 Road & Wilkinson Road towards Brighouse Station
  • April 2021 - PM school special trip towards Brighouse Station starting from Horseshoe Way & No. 5 Road revised to run with suburban buses
  • September 2021 - COVID-19 service adjustment: Peak hour service reduced from every 10 minutes to every 10–12 minutes
  • April 2022 - Service renamed from 408 Brighouse Station/Ironwood/Riverport to 408 Garden City
