25 King Edward TransLink Accessible bullet-b.png is a bus route operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Route Details

This is an east-west route connecting Brentwood Station in Burnaby and the University of British Columbia running primarily on King Edward Avenue. It is a Frequent Transit Network (FTN) route providing service 15 minutes or better for 15 hours or more of the day, seven days a week.

Eastbound trips depart from the University of British Columbia heading south on Wesbrook Mall, east on W. 16th Avenue, south on Dunbar Street, east on W. King Edward Avenue, south on Kingsway, north on Nanaimo Street to Nanaimo Station. Continuing from Nanaimo Station, trips continue north on Nanaimo Street, east on E. 22nd Street, south on Boundary Road, east on Kincaid Street becoming Sanderson Way, north on Willingdon Avenue, west on Dawson Street, north on Rosser Avenue, and east on Lougheed Highway to Brentwood Station.

Westbound trips depart from Brentwood Station heading east on Lougheed Highway, south on Willingdon Avenue, west on Sanderson Way becoming Kincaid Street, north on Boundary Road, west on E. 22nd Avenue, south on Nanaimo Street, and east on E. 24th Street to Nanaimo Station. Continuing from Nanaimo Station, trips head west on E. 24th Street, south on Nanaimo Street, west on Kingsway, west on E. King Edward Avenue, north on Dunbar Street, west on W. 16th Avenue, and north on Wesbrook Mall to the University of British Columbia.

Select evening and late-night westbound trips terminate at Granville Street & W. King Edward Avenue. The last eastbound trip daily departing UBC terminates at Nanaimo Station. On Friday afternoons, one trip departing UBC short-turns at Nanaimo Station when school is in session.

Some westbound trips start at Nanaimo Station, King Edward Station, and E. 22nd Avenue & Boundary Road. Some eastbound trips start at W. King Edward Avenue & Granville Street and W. King Edward Avenue & Dunbar Street.

History

  • December 1982 - Service introduced as the 25 King Edward, running from Brentwood Mall to Blanca Loop, with service extending to UBC when school is in session during peak hours [1]
  • May 1984 - Destination sign simplification: Service renamed from 25 King Edward to 25 Brentwood/Blanca/UBC [2][3]
  • January 1986 - Service revised to connect with SkyTrain at Nanaimo Station[4]
  • October 1990 - Accessible service introduced[5]
  • December 1992 - Routing revised to go via 16th Avenue and Wesbrook Mall; service along Blanca Street and University Boulevard discontinued and all trips extended to UBC year-round[6]
  • April 1996 - Accessible low floor bus service introduced for all days[7]
  • September 2003 - Operations transferred to Oakridge Transit Centre (OTC) from Burnaby Transit Centre (BTC)
  • Winter 2008 - Operations transferred from Burnaby Transit Centre to Vancouver Transit Centre[8]
  • December 2008 - Became part of the Frequent Transit Network with weekend service improved from 20 to 15 minutes[9]
  • February 1–March 21, 2010 - Vancouver 2010 Olympic service: Service rerouted near UBC and rerouted off of Wesbrook Mall and 16th Avenue via University Boulevard and Blanca[10]
  • December 2013 - Closure of Brentwood Station bus loop results in relocation of the terminus to Lougheed Highway & Willingdon Avenue
  • May 2020 - Discontinuation of AM peak hour BCIT short-turn trips
  • April 2021 - 19 stops in both directions removed as part of a six-week pilot project for bus stop balancing to improve bus travel times. Initially, 20 stops were to be removed but one (WB W. King Edward & Laurel) was reinstated following a pre-project public consultation period and its removal would have resulted in a spacing that was too wide/it served an essential purpose for the community
  • January 2022 - COVID-19 service adjustment: Saturday service reduced from every 10–15 minutes to every 12–15 minutes
  • June 2022 - Eastern terminus revised from Lougheed Highway at farside Willingdon Avenue to nearside Willingdon Avenue due to construction at the south entrance of Brentwood Station. Routing revised to go west on Dawson Street, north on Rosser Avenue, east on Lougheed Highway to terminus. Routing via Alpha Avenue and Dawson Street discontinued.
  • September 2022 - Various weekday frequency adjustments resulting in increased peak hour service and reduced evening service due to changing ridership demand
    • AM peak hour service increased from every 5–19 minutes to every 5–15 minutes
    • PM peak hour service increased from every 6–11 minutes to every 3–10 minutes
    • Evening service decreased from every 8012 minutes to every 12–17 minutes
  • January 2023 - Saturday daytime service increased from every 12–15 minutes to every 10–12 minutes
  • April 2023 - Service renamed from 25 Brentwood Station/UBC to 25 King Edward. Various daily service adjustments
    • Nighttime weekday service increased from every 30 minutes to every 20 minutes
    • Saturday morning service increased from every 15 minutes to every 10–12 minutes
    • Saturday afternoon service increased from every 12–15 minutes to every 10–12 minutes
    • Sunday/holiday late-afternoon service increased from every 15 minutes to every 12 minutes
  • April 2024 - Introduction of articulated buses. Rollout was initially planned for January 2024 but was deferred due to delays related to the delivery of new buses. Various daily service adjustments due to the change in vehicle type:
    • AM peak hour service reduced from every 3–12 minutes to every 4–15 minutes
    • PM peak hour service reduced from every 5–12 minutes to every 5–15 minutes
    • Weekday evening service reduced from every 12 minutes to every 15 minutes
    • Weekend/holiday daytime service reduced from every 10–12 minutes to every 12–15 minutes
