Caterpillar C9

The Caterpillar C9 is an inline 6 cylinder heavy duty diesel engine. It has a displacement of 9.3L, but had a displacement of 8.8L prior to 2007. In 2007, a variable nozzle turbocharger was also added.

The C9 uses CAT's Advanced Combustion Emission Reduction Technology (ACERT) which incorporated air and fuel control systems to meet EPA 2004. Improved air management uses a series of turbochargers to force more cool, clean air into the combustion chamber instead of cooled-EGR technology. The C9 also uses variable valve actuation to control air where electronic control valve actuation complementary to camshaft actuation. A diesel oxidation catalyst further reduces emissions.

To meet EPA 2007, the C9 was further developed with ACERT. This included Clean Gas Induction (CGI) and a particulate filter with Cat Regeneration System (CRS).

In 2008, Caterpillar has announced that they will not be updating their engines for EPA 2010 certification, and will exit the on-highway engine business entirely. The C9 has been discontinued as of 2010.
