Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority or Capital Metro, is the public transit operator for the city of Austin, Texas and the suburbs of Travis and Williamson Counties.

History

The creation of Capital Metro was approved in 1985 by the citizens of Austin with a one-cent sales tax. In 1986, the system was launched, taking over the existing City of Austin bus services from the previous operator Austin Transit Corporation.[1]

Routes

MetroBus - (electric blue) includes circulators, rail connectors, crosstown, UT shuttle, and routes serving downtown.

MetroExpress - (red) includes flyer routes, which run along major freeways from residential neighborhoods, park and rides, or rail stations. Some routes use the toll lanes along MoPac highway.

MetroRAPID - (silver) bus rapid transit (BRT) routes that serve the heaviest corridors using articulated and 40-ft buses. There are plans for expand the Rapid network in the future.

MetroRail - (red) commuter train service along 32 miles of track and 9 stations from downtown Austin to the city of Leander.

MetroAccess - (white) paratransit service using small cutaway vans.

  • 1025 was the Voith transmission test bus for Capital Metro.
  • 1 unit (possibly 1014 or 1016) had an electrical fire in late 1998 and retired.

  • 1 unit was bought by Buffalo Creek Baptist Church in Waxahachie, TX.[3] It was eventually sold off, possibly to a private owner in Mexico.
  • 1 unit was found in a storage lot known as Diesel Tech in Pflugerville, TX in 2012. However it has since closed.[4]

  • 1700-1726 were used by the University of Texas UT Shuttle System. Later (circa 1999) higher units began to swap with Capital Metro for usage on the UT Shuttle.
  • 1701, 1739 & 1751 were bought by Silverado Stages for shuttle use in Lake Tahoe, CA and the Diablo Nuclear power plant. They became 83991-83993.
  • 1732 was spotted at Buses For Business in New Braunfels, TX in 2014.[6][8] It was used for the UT Shuttle before retirement.
  • 15 units to Kent State University Campus Bus Service 6039, 6339, 6539, 6639, 6939, 7039, 7139, 7239, 7339, 7439, 7539, 7639, 7739, 7839 & 7938 in July-August 2002.
    • 1736 & 1735 became a parts buses as 7039 & 7639.
    • 1703 & 1704 became 7339 & 7439.
    • 1752 became 7938 (originally 7939).
