Canadian Pacific Railway Budd cars
The Canadian Pacific Railway Budd cars were an order of passenger cars built by Budd in 1954-1955.
All surviving cars were transferred to VIA Rail Canada in 1978, when VIA took over operation of CP's passenger trains.
Order
The overall order was for 173 cars, which would provide enough cars to fully equip CP's new flagship transcontinental train, the Canadian, as well as to re-equip the Dominion. The brand-new streamlined coaches were successful in attracting increased ridership to the route; this was especially so amongst tourists, attracted by the scenery along the route which was displayed well by the multiple dome cars on each consist.
The order consisted of long-distance coaches, sleepers, diners, dome-buffet-lounge, baggage-dormitories, and sleeper-observation cars. The sleepers, diners, and sleeper-observation cars were assigned names based on Canadian individuals, hotels, and parks respectively. The remaining cars were simply numbered. All cars received an identical livery, in unpainted stainless steel with a Tuscan red letterboard containing the Canadian Pacific name.
Details
Coach
CP received 30 long-distance coaches. They were built between April and August 1955, and featured 62 seats configured for long-distance travel.
Five cars were reconfigured in 1963 to act as parlour cars; they were renumbered to 6620-6624. They were converted back to regular long-distance coaches in 1973, and resumed using their original numbers.
