Brampton Transit 0181-0188
Brampton Transit 0181-0188 were Orion 05.501 "Orion V" buses built in 2001. The order was originally for 9 Orion V buses, but cut down to 8 with 3 secondhand GM New Looks acquired (8289, 8690-8691).
All units were built at the OBI/Bus Industries of America plant in Oriskany NY, delivered by the end of September 2001, and entered service in September/October 2001 (although they were originally expected to be delivered in June of that year). The delivery of most of this order was further delayed by a few weeks due to the terrorist attacks on September 11th causing border issues.
They differ from the 1999 order of Orion V's in having Balios destination signs that initially scrolled the destination, and a more powerful Cummins ISM/Voith D863 powertrain.
Somewhere along the line, 0183 received Axion LED destination signs.
Two units, 0184 and 0185, had trial security cameras (different makes) installed inside during 2002.
As of April 2009, all were equipped with bike racks and were based out of Sandalwood Garage.
Note there is a gap at VIN number 1VH5H3H2116501617 in the series, it is currently unknown what was built in that place. It is speculated this VIN may have been allocated to the 9th bus before it was changed to 8.
Retirement
Due to the push to have fully accessible low floor transit fleets in the GTA, this order of Orion V's were not refurbished, and were taken out of service at the beginning of November 2013 and retired at just over 12 years old.
All units were stored at the back of Clark garage after retirement with their fareboxes and Presto units removed until March-April 2016 when they were disposed of and removed from the property.
Due to the fact that no new buses had replaced these units at the time of retirement, Brampton Transit ordered and took delivery of 23 Nova Bus LFS buses in 2016, with 10 units allocated to replace the 8 retired units in this series, plus 9965 and 9968. The remaining 13 units were purchased for service expansion.
