BC Transit
BC Transit is a provincial government corporation that provides planning, marketing, fleet and funding support for all transit services in BC, except for the Greater Vancouver region. Its headquarters is located at 520 Gorge Road East, Victoria B.C.
History
- 1973 - Province of British Columbia Establishes Bureau of Transit Services to facilitate transit services outside Greater Vancouver and Victoria
- 1979 - becomes Urban Transit Authority.
- 1980 - Took over BC Hydro division of Transit in Victoria and Vancouver.
- 1983 - Urban Transit Authority changed it's name to British Columbia Transit Authority. [1]
- 1991 - First low floor buses to operate in regular service in North America arrive.
- 1999 - Vancouver Regional Transit System passed onto the control of Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority
- 2000 - Victoria Regional Transit System put double decker buses in regular service for the first time in North America.
- 2005 - Kelowna Regional Transit System recieved the first production hybrid buses in Canada.
- 2010 to 2014 - Whistler Transit System operated the world's largest single location hydrogen fuel cell bus fleet which operated in regular service.
- 2014 - Introducation of CNG buses to the fleet in the Regional District of Nanaimo Transit System.
- 2015 - CNG buses arrive and start service for Kamloops Transit System.
- August 2015 - 25 buses get automated stop announcements by Trekker Breeze +.
- 2017 - Nanaimo & Kamloops both celebrated being a complete fleet of CNG buses.
- Early 2018 - Whistler Transit System is third system to get CNG buses in service
- May 2018 - Regional District of Nanaimo Transit System 50 XN40 start installation of smart bus technology, the first buses in the fleet to get NextRide technology. [2]
- June 2018 - Comox Valley Transit System buses will be equipment with NextRide technology. [2]
- Summer 2018 - Squamish Transit System and Whistler Transit System buses will be equipment with NextRide technology.[2]
- Fall 2018 - Kamloops Transit System and Kelowna Regional Transit System buses will be equipment with NextRide technology. [2]
- Winter 2018, 2019 -Victoria Regional Transit System buses will be equipment with NextRide technology, the last of initial phase of NextRide technology for BC Transit. [2]
Current projects
NextRide
This project will have an initial phase, to install smart bus technology on buses, on seven system which are: Nanaimo, Comox Valley, Squamish, Kamloops, Kelowna and Victoria. Once buses start having the system install passenger will notice next stop announcements and display of the next stop. To help passenger out at exchanges, and on BC Transit website will be able to track buses to see if they are on schedule. The initial phase of this project is except to be complete by Spring 2019.
