BC Ferries Northern Expedition

The Northern Expedition class contains a single vessel owned and operated by BC Ferries. It is part of BC Ferries' northern fleet, and was built by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft shipyard in Flensburg, Germany. This was the same shipyard responsible for the construction of the Coastal class vessels.

This vessel is flagship of northern base vessels in fleet.

Northern Expedition is one of the two major vessels in BC Ferries' northern fleet.

Northern Expedition was built to replace Queen of Prince Rupert as one of the two vessels in the northern fleet. The contract to construct Queen of Prince Rupert's (yet unnamed) replacement was awarded on August 18, 2006, with construction occurring in 2008 and 2009. Northern Expedition arrived at Departure Bay for acceptance on March 6, 2009. Before entering service, it participated in a special decommissioning ceremony for Queen of Prince Rupert in Prince Rupert on April 19, 2009, alongside Northern Adventure - the only time all three northern fleet vessels were together in one location.

Upon entering service in May 2009, Northern Expedition was assigned to the Inside Passage route, route 10 (Port Hardy - Prince Rupert). This shifted Northern Adventure to cover Queen of Prince Rupert's former Haidi Gwaii duties on route 11 (Prince Rupert - Skidegate). Currently during the summer months Northern Expedition handles Inside Passage sailings on route 10. During the off season, Northern Expedition does most sailings on both the Inside Passage and Haida Gwaii routes. Northern Adventure typically sits idle, unless replacing Northern Expedition during a refit.
