BC Ferries Northern Adventure
The Northern Adventure class contains a single vessel owned and operated by BC Ferries. It is part of BC Ferries' northern fleet.
|Home base||Prince Rupert, Skidegate|
Northern Adventure is one of the two major vessels in BC Ferries' northern fleet.
Northern Adventure was originally built in Greece and named Sonia. Its first route was between Port of Spain, Trinidad and Scarborough, Tobago, leased on behalf of the government of Trinidad and Tobago. It operated on this route from December 2004 to January 2006, when it was chartered by Balearia to operate between Barcelona and the island of Ibiza from April to October 2006.
With the sinking of Queen of the North on March 22, 2006, BC Ferries needed a second vessel to supplement service on its Northern routes. It purchased Sonia in October 2006, and after refit work in Greece and Victoria, BC it entered service on the Inside Passage route on March 31, 2007.
Upon entering service with BC Ferries, it was assigned to replace Queen of the North on the Inside Passage, route 10 (Port Hardy - Prince Rupert). After Northern Expedition was delivered in 2009, Northern Adventure was shifted to replace Queen of Prince Rupert on route 11 (Prince Rupert - Skidegate). Currently, during the summer months Northern Adventure handles sailings to Haida Gwaii on route 11, performing 6 round trips per week. During the off season, Northern Expedition does most sailings on both the Inside Passage and Haida Gwaii routes, while Northern Adventure sits idle.
