The Allison V Series was an automatic transmission used on heavy duty vehicles. It was used on vehicles with a transverse angle drive (V-drive) powertrain layout. It was first produced as a mechanical transmission in 1935. The General Motors Truck and Coach Division first introduced an automatic V-drive transmission for buses in 1947 and then refined the design in 1959 with a hydraulic configuration known as the VH series.[1]

Models

VH Series

This series was introduced for GM buses in 1947. The VH transmission used hydraulic shift governor. It was produced up to 1976 and was discontinued upon the release of the V730 transmission.

Type Max. input power Max. input torque Mass Number of speeds
VH approx. 244.5 kg / 539 lbs (dry) 1 or 2
VH2 approx. 244.5 kg / 539 lbs (dry) 1 or 2
VH4 approx. 244.5 kg / 539 lbs (dry) 1 or 2
VH5 approx. 244.5 kg / 539 lbs (dry) 1 or 2
VH6 approx. 244.5 kg / 539 lbs (dry) 1 or 2
VH7 approx. 244.5 kg / 539 lbs (dry) 1 or 2
VH9 198 hp 600 lb-ft approx. 244.5 kg / 539 lbs (dry) 1 or 2

VS Series

This series was introduced in 1966. The VS transmission used a solenoid to shift. The 3rd gear (overdrive) was powered by hydraulic fluid and had a separate clutch pack. There were minor differences between the models meant for 6 cylinder engines and 8 cylinder engines. It was produced up to 1976 and was discontinued upon the release of the V730 transmission.

Type Max. input power Max. input torque Mass Number of speeds
VS1 259 hp 750 lb-ft approx. 244.5 kg / 539 lbs (dry) 1 or 2
VS2-6 198 hp 600 lb-ft approx. 269.9 kg / 595 lbs (dry) 2 or 3
VS2-8 259 hp 750 lb-ft approx. 269.9 kg / 595 lbs (dry) 2 or 3

V730 Series

This series was introduced in 1976. It was discontinued in 2002. No other V-drive transmissions were produced by Allison afterward.
