Allandale Waterfront GO Station is a GO Transit train station located near Lake Simcoe, at 24 Essa Road in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.

History

The historical Allandale Station structure was built in 1904 and opened on June 19, 1905 by the Grand Trunk Railway. It continued its operation under the Canadian National Railway until 1980 when the station was closed.[1]

In 2009, the City of Barrie initiated renovation work on the Allandale Station grounds, which included the restoration of the historical station building and the construction of a new GO station facility adjacent to the former station. When funding was announced in March 2010 for the renovation of the station, it was named Allandale GO Station reflecting the historical name of the station and area. However, later that year, city council decided to name the station Barrie Waterfront GO Station. GO Transit would have to rename the existing Barrie South GO Station St. Pauls’ GO Station to avoid the use of the Barrie name twice.[2] Losing the Allandale name concerned a large number of citizens and after a vote, city council approved the Allandale Waterfront name in May 2011. This preserved the Allandale name and also highlighted the redevelopment of Barrie's waterfront.[3]

The new GO buses started serving the new station on January 28, 2012, and GO trains began serving the station on January 30. The station is not staffed, however there are heated shelters and ticket vending machines for passengers.

Station description

The station is located on the north side of the tracks stretching east from Essa Road and spanning the north side of Gowan Street. The western part of the station property features the bus platforms and shelters for connecting local routes and GO bus service. The eastern part features the single train platform, station building, and the passenger pick-up and drop-off.

Tickets can be purchased from the station attendant inside the building only during AM rush hours. Ticket Vending machines on the premises are available at all other times.
