Ajax Transit
Ajax Transit was the public transit agency serving the town of Ajax, Ontario.
History
In 1969 Charterways Transportation began operating a bus route in Ajax. Under an agreement the Town Council regulated the fares charged for service within the town. Beginning in 1973, a study of potential transit ridership was conducted that would influence service levels and funding for a local transit system.
Ajax Transit service began in 1976 with operations contracted to Charterways Transportation. The buses that were initially used were school buses, but after a short time dedicated transit buses were purchased. Two General Motors T6H-4523Ns were the first of such buses for the fleet. These vehicles and those that followed were owned by the town.
In November of 1992 Ajax Council voted to implement a town-operated transit system, replacing Charterways Transportation as the operator. This came into effect in January 1993.
In March 2000 the Town of Ajax and City of Pickering agreed to merge transit operations. Ajax Pickering Transit Authority service began on Septenber 4, 2001.
