History
In March 2014, Air Canada placed an order with Boeing for 109 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, with delivery between 2017 and 2021, to replace older narrowbody aircraft in the fleet. The order consisted of 33 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 28 Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft, with substitution available for Boeing 737 MAX 7. 48 purchase options and rights were also included. [1]
As of 2016, delivery plans for the initial order of 737 MAX 8 aircraft were 2 in 2017 and 16 in 2018.[2] The remaining 43 were scheduled to be delivered between 2019-2021.[3]
By 2017, the order had been modified to 50 737 MAX 8 and 11 737 MAX 9 aircraft, with 18 to be delivered in 2019, and the remainder to be delivered in 2020.[4][5]
The first aircraft, C-FTJV, was delivered in October 2017 and placed in service in December 2017.
On 13 March 2019, all MAX 8s were grounded as mandated by Transport Canada. [6] Air Canada re-introduced 737 MAX service in February 2021.[7]
