ABQ RIDE 401-435
ABQ RIDE 401-435 were 2002 Thomas Dennis SLF232G CNG buses. Built in 2001, these 32-foot long buses were generally used on lower ridership routes, or on routes that require making tight turns. They were powered by Cummins Westport B Gas Plus CNG engines. The ABQ RIDE 400-series were the first buses to include TwinVision Amber LED destination signs as well as the Digital Recorders Talking Bus annunciators.
Most of these buses were removed from service prematurely in 2009 due to poor reliability and structural integrity issues, with most being replaced by the 900-series New Flyer Industries DE40LFR diesel-electric hybrid buses. Some were kept until 2011 for lower ridership routes such as the 1-Juan Tabo, with occasional service on the 2-Eubank, 31-Wyoming, and 51-Atrisco/Rio Bravo, and the free D-Ride circulator route in Downtown Albuquerque continued to use these buses until 2014 when the route was switched to 300-series Neoplan USA AN440 CNG buses. The buses that remained in service after 2009 were retrofitted with GFI Genfare Odyssey validating fareboxes with card readers and dispensers in October 2009.
The 400-series buses were based at the Yale Transit Facility in southeastern Albuquerque alongside the 300-series and 900-series buses, while the buses withdrawn from service were stored at the Daytona Transit Facility on the Albuquerque Westside awaiting their disposition. While Santa Fe Trails in Santa Fe, New Mexico had interest in purchasing some of these buses from ABQ RIDE, the proposal was eventually rejected due to engine starting problems with the test bus provided by ABQ RIDE.
As of January 2013, all of the 400-series buses (except 402-404) have been auctioned off. As of July 2014, the last three units (402-404) have been retired and replaced by part of the 600-series New Flyer Industries XN40 fleet.
