West Coast Transit System serves the central west coast of Vancouver Island, BC. It primarily serves to connect the regional municipalities of Tofino and Ucluelet, also stopping in Long Beach, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ community of hitaću, and the Tla-o-qui-aht communities of Esowista and Ty-histanis. Planning, administration support, and fleet vehicles are provided by BC Transit, working with Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government, and Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation. Operation of service is contracted to PWTransit.
History
- 2018: A Transit Feasibility Study is conducted by BC Transit and Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District.
- February 27, 2020: Testing of future bus stop locations conducted using 4046.
- May 2020: Service Plan is published.[1] System launch date estimated for Spring 2022.
- April 2, 2024: Service begins operating as West Coast Transit. Due to delays in securing provincial funding, the system is initially operated as an independent service, funded directly by ACRD.
- March 1, 2025: Operations transitioned to a BC Transit run service with new buses and branding rolled out; the same schedule and contractor are retained. System name adjusted to West Coast Transit System.[2]
