The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) is the primary public transit provider serving the Greater Louisville, KY area, including Bullitt and Oldham counties in Kentucky, and the cities of Jeffersonville, Clarksville, and New Albany in Southern Indiana. TARC's fleet of 226[1] buses operates 24 local routes, 11 express routes, and 12 special routes providing various shuttle services.

TARC's door-to-door ADA paratransit service, known as TARC3, is operated by First Transit, Inc.

TARC was formed in 1974 to take over the operations of the for-profit Louisville Transit Company, and has since taken over the operations of the remaining smaller for-profit operators in Greater Louisville over the next few years. TARC's headquarters is located in the historic Union Station building, which previously served as the city's passenger station on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad.

Routes

TARC's present route numbering system was implemented in 1954 by the Louisville Transit Company for its system map and pocket schedules. North-south routes along numbered streets generally got assigned even numbers, while east-west routes were generally assigned odd numbers. Route numbers did not appear on destination signs until Louisville Transit's first purchase of GM New Look buses in 1961.
