Train de Charlevoix is a rail transit service operating between Québec City and La Malbaie in the province of Quebec. Originally intended to act as a link between Baie-Saint-Paul's tourist area and Le Massif ski resort, it is now aimed to serve commuters and tourists movements towards and inside Charlevoix region.

The service is operated by Réseau Charlevoix. This non-profit, private-public partnership is composed of the Le Massif de Charlevoix resort, Tourisme Charlevoix, Charlevoix Chamber of Commerce, municipality of Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, and town of Baie-Saint-Paul.

History

The Société de gestion des équipements publics de Charlevoix (now Réseau Charlevoix) was created following the purchase and redevelopment of the Le Massif ski resort by Cirque du Soleil co-founder Daniel Gauthier. Réseau Charlevoix was created to manage local public facilities included in the Le Massif project such as a theatre hall, public markets, rail shuttle, rail stations, and a gondola.

The Chemin de fer Charlevoix was acquired in 2009 from Société des Chemins de fer du Québec via Le Massif's subsidiary Train Touristique de Charlevoix inc. That company bought various equipment from abroad to operate a sightseeing train between Québec and Le Massif's hostelling complex in Baie-Saint-Paul. In addition, it bought two sets of diesel multiple units from Deutsche Bahn AG in 2011 to serve on what would become the train léger de Charlevoix. The two DB Class 628.1 DMUs, of which only three were ever produced, were refurbished and entered service in December 2013.

Originally operating as a winter shuttle between Baie-Saint-Paul and Le Massif ski resort, the line was extended to Chutes-Montmorency station in Québec City and the former Pointe-au-Pic station (now La Malbaie).

Fares

Fares vary from 9,95$ to 69,95$ per trip leg, depending on the age and destination of the traveller. Additional fees apply for seats facing the river.

Since July 1st, 2015, PLUMobile and metropolitan monthly passes are accepted onboard between Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and Chutes-Montmorency stations.[2]
