History
Order
They were originally supposed to be part of an order for 100 RTS buses built by Nova Bus. When Nova realized that they could not meet the delivery schedule, the order was amended and the TTC acquired 51 buses from New Flyer instead. The D40LFs were the first diesel low-floor buses the TTC owned, and the last buses received by the TTC in the 20th century.
The first bus, unit 7300, arrived at Hillcrest on July 24, 1998. The remaining 50 buses were delivered to Eglinton Garage throughout summer 1999.
Refurbishments and Modifications
In 2001, the series began receiving the UWE system for outdoor storage in anticipation of the opening of the new Eglinton Garage on Comstock Road. Beginning in early 2008, the fleet underwent a midlife rebuild. The first to be completed was 7331, which had experienced a fire in May 2004 and had been in storage ever since; the last unit, 7345, was completed in December 2009. All buses have bike racks, automated announcements, and CCTV cameras. In August 2009, driver barriers were spotted being installed in a few buses. Installation was complete on the rest of this series by late 2009 to early 2010.
7350 was fitted with Luminator Horizon destination signs as a test for the upcoming Orion VII order. Buses in the series began having their original flip-dot signs replaced with Horizon signs as components failed. By fall 2014, all remaining buses received the new Horizon signs.
Delivery and Movement History
When introduced, the entire series was originally based at Old Eglinton garage. They were able to retire the remaining 8300 and 8400 series Flyer D901s as well as some 6300 series D40s. The new buses moved to new Eglinton garage on Comstock Road upon its opening in 2002. Following the arrival of the 75xx-series Orion VIIs, they were moved to Queensway in 2004 to replace some of the 6000 and 6100 series Flyer D901s.
Deployment History
From the beginning of these units lives they appeared on routes 5 Avenue Rd, 11 Bayview, 21 Brimley, 28 Davisville, 34 Eglinton East, 42 Cummer, 51 Leslie, 56 Leaside, 65 Parliament, 72 Pape, 75 Sherbourne, 81 Thorncliffe Park, 87 Cosburn, 88 South Leaside, 94 Wellesley, 97 Yonge, 100 Flemingdon Park, 190 Scarborough Centre Rocket, and 197 North Yonge.
When this series moved to Queensway they were regularly found on routes 15 Evans, 26 Dupont, 30 Lambton, 37 Islington, 40 Junction, 44 Kipling South, 45 Kipling, 48 Rathburn, 49 Bloor West, 50 Burnhamthorpe, 66 Prince Edward, 73 Royal York, 76 Royal York South, 80 Queensway, 110 Islington South, 111 East Mall, 112 West Mall, 123 Shorncliffe, 145 Downtown/Humber Bay Express, 168 Symington, 192 Airport Rocket, 300 Bloor-Danforth, 315 Evans-Brown's Line and 337 Islington.
Retirements
The first bus of the series, 7308, was prematurely retired in 2010 following an engine fire on August 11, 2010. Retirements of these buses began in January 2016 and lasted through September 2016 as the TTC began receiving the second batch of 40 foot diesel Nova Bus LFS buses. The final unit, 7343 saw its final day of service on September 26, 2016 on 112 West Mall.
