Toronto Transit Commission 6560-6638 were New Flyer D40 buses built and delivered in 1990. They are referred to as D40-90s mainly to distinguish them from the other three D40 orders (1987, 1988, 1989). These were the first buses for the conventional fleet to be delivered with air conditioning.

History

Order

The Commission had awarded a $17.2 million contract to New Flyer Industries for the supply of 79 diesel buses to be delivered in 1990. These were also the first buses for the conventional fleet came with air conditioning and were exactly identical to the previous orders with small differences, they were similar looking on the exterior except the rear portion. They were delivered in the "CLRV" livery used from the 1980s into the 1990s and the first buses to be delivered with electronic Luminator destination signs as well as the first Cummins diesel engines in the conventional fleet. They were delivered alongside 6640-6745 and 9370-9394.

This series of buses have a different interior scheme with the seating arrangement altered. Similar to the past orders, they had standard cream and brown colour scheme on the inside and was configured for 40 passengers using the Otaco Model 6468 passenger seats that has padded brown vinyl seat inserts. Additional features that also came were the ZF 4HP500 4 speed transmission and the kneeling capability that allows the elderly to board the buses as indicated by the "Easier Access" sticker.

Modifications

Between 1997 through 2001, the buses received a 6-year rebuild. 6565 and 6574 were the first buses to be refurbished. The padded seats were replaced with unpadded red fabric from Holdsworth. The ZF transmissions were replaced with Allison V730 transmissions removed from scrapped buses in 2000 after they were proved to be unreliable with components failing in under six months. Because of the buses' weight and lack of retarder, the rear rims overheated. They were replaced with more robust rims to mitigate the problem. They received body work and were also given a fresh coat of paint giving the buses the TTC's current livery.

Movement History

This series were originally delivered to Danforth (6560-6604) and Old Eglinton (6605-6638) to replace some of the 7700, 7900, and 8000 series New Looks buses built in the 1970s. A few of the buses were later transferred to Queensway.

In February 1996, some of the buses from Danforth and Eglinton were transferred to Arrow and Queensway. Queensway's buses were later transferred to Arrow Road by 1998 or 1999. By 2001, all of the series were now concentrated at Malvern division.

Deployment

These buses were found on various Arrow Rd., Danforth, Old Eglinton, and Queensway routes.

In its final years, these buses were confined to Malvern and could be found on routes 9 Bellamy, 10 Van Horne, 21 Brimley, 38 Highland Creek, 39 Finch East, 53 Steeles East, 54 Lawrence East, 57 Midland, 85 Sheppard East, 95 York Mills, 102 Markham Rd, 129 McCowan North, 130 Middlefield, 131 Nugget, 132 Milner, 133 Neilson, 134 Progress, 139 Finch-Don Mills, 169 Huntingwood, 224 Victoria Park North, 268 Warden North, 308 Finch East, 309 Finch West, and 321 York Mills.

Retirements

Because of mechanical and corrosion problems, the series of buses were retired between September 2001 and June 2004. The TTC deemed it uneconomical to have the buses go through their 12-year rebuild and continue in service until 2003 to 2004 and purchased 220 low floor buses from Orion.[1]
