Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation 6001-6039
Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation 6001-6039 are New Flyer Industries D40LF buses built between 2003 and 2005. These vehicles were all delivered new to the Detroit Department of Transportation as part of either 3900-3959, 3975-3989 or 4100-4220, all built at the Crookston, Minnesota assembly plant, and were considered surplus by DDOT following several service adjustments between 2011 and 2013. DDOT sold these buses to SMART in November 2013, but the first units were not placed into service until February 2016, in the interim parked at the graveyard area of the Macomb Terminal property retaining their DDOT markings and exterior ads.
The exteriors of these buses were repainted into the same retro-styled livery templates used on the Gillig BRTs, received new license plates, and the previous Luminator Horizon signs were replaced with the current Horizon version (as noted by a different control panel on the interior and no capability to display bold characters). The interiors received minor changes, including a new driver's seat and a new interior sign and automated announcement system like those used on all other SMART fixed-route buses, with most of the former DDOT stickers left in place.
The first digit of the fleet number indicates the year the vehicle first entered service with SMART (in this case 2016) instead of the year the vehicle was actually built.
Upon entering service, they retired several Gillig Low Floors that were in poor condition due to the combination of usage of the less-powerful Detroit Diesel Series 40E, not intended for such long routes as a number of SMART's routes are, prior to their 2009-10 retrofittings with Cummins ISL engines; and the harsh winter conditions. An additional D40LF was purchased from DDOT for use as a parts bus.
Many buses from this series were abruptly pulled from service during the summer of 2016 for major maintenance work on the rooftop air-conditioning units, most of which were broken in some sort. By September 3, 2016, they were placed back into active service, the first being 6021, which reentered service on route 160 Downriver.
