This north-south express bus route runs between Downtown Seattle and Puyallup via Federal Way, Sumner and Auburn.

The 578 shares a portion of its route with Sounder Rail S Line commuter trains, and offers off-peak service along the train's corridor. The 578 offers very limited morning peak-hour service, as to avoid duplication of Sounder routing. However, afternoon peak-hour service operates at regular frequencies.
