Santa Maria Area Transit

Santa Maria Regional Transit or SMRT is a transit service in Santa Maria, California. It operates local service within the city limits as well as an intercity service known as The Breeze Bus which provides weekday commuter bus service to Vandenberg Air Force Base, Lompoc, Los Alamos, Buellton and Solvang.

History

Santa Maria Regional Transit began operations in 1978 under the name Santa Maria Area Transit (SMAT). Operations were contracted out to the Santa Maria Organization of Transportation Helpers (SMOOTH) from 1978-2004, which oversaw a large expansion of SMAT's service hours and routes. Santa Maria Area Transit has had 3 different contractors since then, with MV Transportation taking over in 2004, First Transit in 2011 and RATP Dev in 2018. In 2011, SMAT's transit center (Santa Maria Transit Center) opened. On December 28th, 2021, Santa Maria Area Transit rebranded as Santa Maria Regional Transit (SMRT).
