San Francisco MUNI 2001-2249 are Siemens S200 light rail vehicles (LRVs) built and delivered from 2016 to 2026. Collectively they are known as LRV4 models.

History

Procurement

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is to receive up to 215 LRVs for the Muni Metro. The LRV4, as they are known, will be used for expansion and eventual replacement of the Breda LRVs.

The selection of the manufacturer was based on qualitative and technical characteristics, in addition to the cost. The Request for Proposals was issued in September 2013 to manufacturers who had been short-listed based on the Request for Qualifications issued prior. CAF and Siemens each submitted a proposal for evaluation. The SFMTA board authorized the award of contract SFMTA-19-2013 to Siemens, who had achieved the most favorable score.[1]

The Siemens LRVs, which are being manufactured in Sacramento, California, has a lightweight car body and comply with stringent weight restrictions. A new door design features significantly fewer parts than the existing LRVs. Modularity and advanced diagnostics are expected to ease maintenance.[1]

Similar to the Calgary Series 9 LRVs, three exterior designs were presented: "Gate", "Presidio", and "Skyline". Each design differed in the curvature of the car end as well as headlight configuration. Initial presentations also showed three liveries composed of blue for "Gate", teal for "Presidio", and red for "Skyline". When presented to the public, each exterior wore an adapted version of the current red and silver MUNI livery. Inside color schemes included red, black, and brown with either transverse or longitudinal seating. The Skyline exterior with a red interior and longitudinal seating layout was most favored by customers surveyed.

On June 15, 2015, a full-scale mockup was displayed to the public on The Embarcadero. Further design work was carried out through to 2016. Six design changes were later identified. The front steps of the LRV4 are now able to be deployed independently of the others. A colored block on the destination sign was added as well as a new integrated CAD/AVL system. Operators are able to enter train identification for the whole train from one cab. A handheld radio charger has been added to the cab. Finally, the LRVs are being provided with Siemens Expert Diagnostic Software.[2]

The first LRV4 was delivered to the Muni Metro East facility on January 13, 2017.[3] It underwent extensive testing and more deliveries followed. The first LRV4 was expected to enter service in late summer 2017. On November 17th, 2017, the first LRV4 (unit 2006) entered service with an official ceremony on the N-Judah Line. Initially, 24 trains were planned to be in service by the end of 2018. However, Muni now anticipates 68 new vehicles in service over the same period of time.[4]

Features

The S200s have a number of notable improvements over older cars in the MUNI Metro fleet, including:

  • Colorblocks on the headsigns to Identify which route.
  • Driver Operated single stair lift, to not overwhelm the other staircases in the train when a Wheelchair is Entering or Exiting the Train.
  • Heating and Air Conditioning
  • Illuminated door buttons: green when doors are unlocked, red when the doors are out of Service. (Door buttons do not illuminate in Automatic Mode in the Subway, unless the Door is Out of Service or in Manual Mode)
  • Interior digital screens showing upcoming stations
  • A glass operator compartment allowing for an unrestricted view out the front of the train
  • Twice as many interior speakers for better announcement coverage
  • A new seating layout with a dedicated space for wheelchairs, or strollers in the center of the train, and Accessible Seating in the Front and Back Cars of the Train
  • 12 high resolution interior and exterior cameras per car
