RIPTA, or the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, is the public bus service for the whole state of Rhode Island, though their services are heavily concentrated to the eastern part of the state.

History

  • RIPTA was founded in 1964 by the Rhode Island General Assembly to supervise and take over the multitude of private bus routes operated in Rhode Island.
  • RIPTA began operating its own bus fleet on July 1st, 1966

Routes

  • RIPTA offers normal local service routes, express service for commuters or travel over long distances, a limited stop "Rapid Line", and "Flex" van service. Certain routes with high ridership and frequent service are considered "Key Corridor" routes.
  • Most non-Flex routes run out of at least one of RIPTA's three main transportation hubs: Providence's Kennedy Center, Newport's Visitor Center, and Pawtucket's Pawtucket Transit Center.

•Free for all seniors and disabled people who have low incomes. For everyone else, the fare is the regular fare ($2.00) during peak hours (7:00 AM-9:00 AM, 3:00 PM-6:00 PM on non-holiday weekdays) and $1.00 during off-peak hours (All other times) ••Only charged if you pay the on board fare as opposed to a pass

Note: The 1-Day Pass is valid until 2 AM of the following day.
