Pickering Transit
Pickering Transit was the public transit agency serving the city of Pickering, Ontario.
History
Transit service in Pickering began in 1970 with the Bay Ridges Dial-A-Bus, a demonstration project conducted by the Government of Ontario. Minibuses operated by GO Transit provided on-demand transit service in the community of Bay Ridges. In 1973, Pickering Town Council voted in favour of taking over the transit service.[1] Pickering Dial-A-Bus expanded to other communities in the town.
By the mid-1980s, the system was known as Pickering Transit and supplemented Dial-A-Bus service with fixed route service to Pickering GO Station during rush hour. In 1992, Pickering Transit moved away from Dial-A-Bus service and added all-day fixed route service. Fixed-route service now operated until 7:20 PM with Dial-A-Bus service available from that time to 1:20 AM Monday to Saturday. A regular route between Ajax GO Station and Pickering Town Centre was also established.[2]
In March 2000 the Town of Ajax and City of Pickering agreed to merge transit operations. The first day of Ajax Pickering Transit Authority service began on September 4, 2001.
