Ottawa-Carleton Regional Transit Commission Lycee Claudel Station
Lycée Claudel

Lycée Claudel Station (formerly Abbey Station) is located on the southeast transitway, between Riverside Drive and Old Riverside Drive just south of Hincks Lane. Lycée Claudel is named for an adjacent French private school.
Originally the stations name was "Abbey" as there was plans to build a pedestrian underpass under the CN Smith Falls Subdivision to connect Alta Vista Drive to the Transitway from Abbey and Balfour. In the planning process, the pedestrian underpass was eliminated and never ended up being built.
In 2000, the Lycée Claudel Board of Directors requested that OC Transpo rename the station after their school, since the name "Abbey" was no longer relevant. That request prompted an investigation into reviving the pedestrian underpass plans. However the nearest house was a 300-meter walk from the station and concerns about security given the isolation of such an underpass was reasons not to build it. The walking distance was shorter to the route 8 and 88 on Alta Vista Drive which provided direct service to Downtown Ottawa, so for these reasons the pedestrian underpass idea was once again dropped.
In 2002, the City of Ottawa was hesitant to rename it after a school as Transitway Stations are generally named after streets or major shopping centres. The concerns raised by the City was that unlike streets or shopping centres, schools can be moved at any time. The city did look into possibly renaming it to "Riverside Station", which at the time was the name of the street on both sides of the station, but there was already a Riverside Station just two stops south of Abbey. At the time the city was in the process of renaming the Riverside on the east of the station to "Old Riverside". However at the time that process appeared to be 18 months away from being renamed. The Lycée Claudel Board of Directors then reassured the city that the school wouldn't be moving anytime soon, so it was decided to go ahead and rename it after the school.
The renaming from Abbey to Lycée Claudel took place officially in September 2002 as part of the service changes that also occur at that time. This way the system map, as well as all the route maps which would have been changed anyway would feature the new name of the station. The cost of changing the signage at the station was estimated at $5,000, which the school covered the cost associated with the change [1].
