The Motor Coach Industries 102-D3 quickly became the industry's standard motorcoach. It was available with a fully paintable body or fluted stainless steel lower body.

A CNG powered version of the 102-D3 (102-DWA3 CNG) was produced for NJ Transit who ordered 77 units.

In 2001, the 102-D3 was renamed the D4000.
