The Moscow Metro, (translated from Russian Cyrillic) Московский метрополитен or Moskovsky Metropoliten is the state-run subway (heavy rail) operator for the city of Moscow and nearby Moscow Oblast cities of Krasnogorsk, Reutov, Lyubertsy and Kotelniki, in Russia. Tram (streetcar or light-rail) and bus services are operated through sister agency Mosgortrans (Мосгортранс) an additional state-run agency.

The system is owned by the Government of Moscow.

At present time, there are sixteen lines and 259 stations, including the six station Moscow Monorail (translated from Монорельс) and thirty-one station Moscow Central Circle line (translated from Московское центральное кольцо).

The Moscow Metro system is reported as the sixth highest in ridership (2.442 billion/yr) throughout the world, with only Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, Guangzhou, and Tokyo registering higher ridership. Moscow Metro is registered having the 19th oldest subway. Presently, the Moscow Metro also has the fifth longest system, trailing Shanghai, Beijing, London and Guangzhou.
