City Centre Transit Terminal is a transit terminal located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
Details
City Centre Transit Terminal is located at 200 Rathburn Road West, directly north of Square One Shopping Centre. It opened on October 20, 1997 and replaced an existing terminal located at the south side of the Square One property near City Centre Drive and Kariya Drive. Plans for a new transit terminal on the current site had been proposed beginning in the late 1980s to accommodate projected ridership levels and the future construction of the Mississauga Transitway.
Upon opening, the terminal consisted of 10 bus bays with a central platform in a 'U' shape. A supervisor booth is located on the north end of the platform near Rathburn Road. The south end of the platform contains the terminal building with access to the lower level and Square One Shopping Centre via a outdoor walkway. Inside the terminal building, amenities such as a information desk, fare booth, vending machines and washrooms are available.
Beginning in 2000, additional bus stops were constructed along Rathburn Road directly west of the terminal to accommodate additional routes and the introduction of GO Transit bus service in September 2000.
By 2005, the expanding service levels of MiWay and GO Transit highlighted the need for increased capacity at the terminal. A new GO Transit bus terminal was built on Station Gate Road, located on the north side of Rathburn Road directly across from the terminal. Additional bus bays were also constructed by expanding the terminal on the east side, becoming more of a 'L' shape. This expansion opened on November 29, 2005. In 2011, additional bus stops would be constructed along Rathburn Road directly east of the terminal entrance.
The first phase of the Mississauga Transitway opened in November 2014 between City Centre and Dixie Station. To coincide with the opening, a upgraded shelter was constructed at platform 'A' on Rathburn Road, consisting of a larger enclosed waiting area with heating, benches, and security cameras. A new platform 'O' was also constructed on the north side of Rathburn Road with a heated shelter similar in style to that on platform 'A'. Both platform 'A' and 'O' allow buses operating on the transitway to serve the terminal without entering the terminal itself.
Between April and September 2016, the terminal was closed for major structural repair work at the south end (turnaround) of the terminal. Additional structural work and utlity relocation occured during July and August 2018. During these periods, MiWay buses served passengers using temporary bus stops along Rathburn Road.
Upgrades to the terminal building have also taken place since the opening of the terminal. In 2015, the passenger washrooms were completely renovated. Beginning in early 2020, the entire terminal building underwent a complete interior renovation. The most notable change involves relocation of the existing information desk and fare booths to opposite ends of the terminal building. Updated interior finishes and accessibility improvements are also included to enhance the customer experience of the terminal.
With over 45,000 passengers using the City Centre Transit Terminal daily, it remains the most important terminal in the MiWay network with many routes serving it. The planned introduction of the Hurontario LRT in fall 2024 will ensure the terminal continues to be an integral part of Mississauga's transit network.
