History

During the early morning hours of January 17, 1994, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake occurred in the San Fernando Valley portion of LA county, lasting about 10-20 seconds with two strong aftershocks following the main seismic event, leading to widespread property damage, residential displacement, over 8,700 injuries and 57 deaths. Portions of the Interstate 5, 10, 210, State Routes 14 and 118 freeways collapsed from the quake, resulting in overly rampant traffic congestion; the Metro Red Line, Amtrak, and Metrolink train services were barely affected from it with a brief pause in service, allowing for a substantial increase of ridership and creation of the Metrolink Ventura County and Antelope Valley lines, while six temporary routes (634, 640, 641, 642, 644, and 646) were made around two weeks after the aforementioned disaster.[1][2]

59 buses were bought for the temporary emergency service, which included the 1984 TMC motorcoaches apparently leased from Greyhound USA/Hausman; the buses here were mostly plain with the orange LA Metro labels. All units operated at Division 7 alongside a 1987 Neoplan USA suburban bus, where they were prominently used on the joint Foothill Transit/LA Metro operated line 646; when the emergency declaration was over upon reopening of the freeways affected by the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the temporary emergency routes were dropped, with the leased motorcoaches being brought back to the original operator.[3][4]
