The Jamestown Area Regional Transit System (JARTS) is a former public transit system for the City of Jamestown, New York and its immediate suburbs of Falconer, Lakewood and Celeron.
History
Started in 1962, JARTS replaced services of the Jamestown Motor Bus Transportation Company, which operated between 1938 and 1962.
Service covered the city of Jamestown, with additional suburban services to Falconer and Lakewood. Service was contracted to Elmira, New York-based Progressive Transportation Services from July 1, 1993 to the end of service. During the operation by PTS, the city of Jamestown made efforts to remove the subsidy given to the system to operate. However, plans were also being made to improve the bottom line by using smaller, more accessible buses, as well as expanding the service area to attract more passengers. Another recommendation was made to reinstate Saturday service, which had previously been eliminated.
Service was shut down on September 30, 1996 after a labor dispute with drivers.
Services began to be reinstated December 10, 1997, although it became part of the Chautauqua Area Rural Transit System (CARTS), operated by Chautauqua County, not the City of Jamestown.[1] [2]
Routes
Buses operated from Downtown Jamestown at the JARTS Junction, near the old train station.
Most routes in the city operated on a 60-minute frequency, with suburban services operating either every 45 minutes (Falconer), or 90 minutes (on either Lakewood-Celeron or Lakewood-Fairmount). For convenience, buses in the city also interlined with another route, creating a one-seat trip from north of downtown to south of downtown.
